Editor

Position Summary

Evaluates and develops manuscripts while consulting with authors on content, style, and format under the direction of a Senior Editor and/or Editorial Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with authors of selected manuscripts to make changes as needed for clarification of material. May rewrite or reorganize materials, where clarification or expansion is required.
  • Edits and proofreads word processed or typeset pages for accuracy and layout.
  • Assigns work (with manager approval) necessary for publication. (e.g., artists, typesetters. proofreaders, assistant editors).
  • Keeps up-to-date in area of specialty by reading appropriate literature, attending seminars and conferences, visiting classrooms, etc.; may make presentations on behalf of the company at trainings, trade shows, etc.; may recruit authors, editors, and speakers at trade shows, from among associates, etc.

Experience and Education

  • Minimum BA or BS degree in education, journalism, English or related field or equivalent experience, Masters degree preferred.
  • Classroom teaching experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of a specialty area, as applicable to K-12 education, is a plus, especially math, science, and/or technology integration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong writing skills, including grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Ability to use a computer for typical publishing company functions.
  • Ability to present information both clearly and creatively and to help authors to do so.
  • Strong organizational skills and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Good communication skills, including ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with authors and others.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment including the ability to judge when it is appropriate to seek help.

Receptionist/Sales Support Coordinator

This position is responsible for Reception and Sales Team support. Daily responsibility includes answering customer questions, entering customer orders, resolving customer issues, and providing administrative support to Sales Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answer incoming phone calls in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Handle customer questions and requests with customer care, attention to detail, and an emphasis on follow-up.
  • Enter customer orders timely and accurately.
  • Work closely with accounting to ensure that customer credit issues and returns are entered correctly and resolved timely.
  • Provide Sales Team support in the areas of customer care, sales material preparation, reporting, projects, sales events, and administrative support.
  • Maintain up-to-date records in customer database (Cispub and Salesforce.com).
  • Communicate with other departments as necessary to ensure customer and Sales Team requests are handled timely.
  • Participate in the development of departmental training materials and plans.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and respect for co-workers, management, customers and visitors.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.
  • Required Skills/Experience/Education:

    • Excellent communication skills.

    Teacher Created Materials is looking for freelance copyeditors/proofreaders for educational manuscripts. Applicants must:

    • possess strong grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills.
    • be able to follow company style for consistency across product lines.
    • read for style, usage, and clarity.
    • be proficient in Microsoft Word and have a working knowledge of Quark or InDesign.

    We need freelance copyeditors/proofreaders willing to proofread educational manuscripts in all content areas including language arts, math, science, social studies, and technology. 2+ years experience in copyediting or proofreading is preferred.
