Building Fluency Through Practice and Performance
Grade Levels: 1–6
Help readers build fluency through guided practice and repeated readings. Develop reading instruction that yields fluent, life-long readers with proven strategies that will motivate even the most reluctant students.
Why You Need This Workshop:
Research has shown that readers who engage in regular, repeated readings improve their word recognition, reading rate, comprehension, and overall reading proficiency. Because fluency happens gradually and with practice, rereading and performing is an effective way for students to improve this skill.
What You'll Learn:
- Learn strategies to improve reading instruction with texts that are meant to be read, reread, and performed.
- Provide guided practice to help students improve their ability to recognize words effortlessly, and read with meaningful expression and phrasing.
- Know which selections, types and levels of text to choose in order to yield the most successful results for all students.
- Learn to incorporate regular reading opportunities during the day, and ideas to schedule and plan performances.
- Implement word study strategies to achieve meaningful oral reading, comprehension, and improved vocabulary.
- Discover ways to liven up the performance to keep students motivated.
- Learn the most effective way to coach all levels of readers with ideas and suggestions to keep students fully engaged.
- Teach students how to interpret text orally, express emotion, and convey the author's meaning.
