Components of Primary Source Readers

Books: Each book motivates students to want to read with high-interest content and engaging photographs. The authentic reading experiences help students develop vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency skills.

• Emergent and Upper Emergent books include picture-text matching, use of key high-frequency words and some content-area vocabulary, text features such as picture glossaries, table of contents, and bulleted/numbered lists. The book details are 5.25" x 7.75" in size, 12-20 pages per book, and a reading level range from 1.0-1.9.
• Early Fluent and Early Fluent Plus books include more challenging content-area vocabulary and high-frequency words. More complex sentence structures and abstract concepts, text features such as sidebars, maps, time lines, and diagrams, and more text-heavy pages. The book details are 5.25" x 7.75" in size, 24-28 pages per book, and a reading level range from 2.0-2.9.
• Fluent and Fluent Plus books include text requiring some reader inference, chapter format, and increasingly specialized vocabulary. Higher-level text features such as table of contents, glossary, and index, as well as complex language and sentence structures. The book details are 7" x 9" in size, 28-32 pages per book, and a reading level range from 3.0-3.9.
• Advanced and Advanced Plus books include challenging vocabulary, introduction of graphic features to support visual literacy, and activities to prompt critical thinking. Text features such as a bibliography, a "More to Explore" section, a glossary, an index, and a table of contents are found in each book. The book details are 5.25" x 8" in size, 48 pages per book, and a reading level range from 4.0-4.9.
• Challenging and Challenging Plus books include detailed and descriptive text, increased use of diverse illustrations, graphics, and text features, and text structures to prompt critical thinking. Text features such as a bibliography, a "More to Explore" section, a glossary, an index, and a table of contents are found in each book. The book details are 5.25" x 8" in size, 64 pages per book, and a reading level range from 5.0-5.9.

Assessment Guide: The Assessment Guide includes research about assessments, how to use the assessments provided with the Assessment Guide, 15 different lessons (1 for each book), references cited, an answer key for the lessons, and a list of contents included in the Assessment DVD.

Home-School Connections: Each kit includes a Parent Tips booklet that teachers can share with parents and families to foster their capacity for building literacy skills at home. To facilitate ongoing reading practice, the Digital Resource CD includes digital versions of the books, which can be printed and replicated for students to take home.

Interactiv-eBooks: The interactiv-eBooks enhance instruction and the reading experience through meaningful tools for interacting with the text, embedded audio and videos, and purposeful activities.

Teacher's Guide: The teacher's guide includes easy-to-use standards-based lesson plans. Each lesson focuses on two of the following key nonfiction skills or strategies: establishing a purpose, using prior knowledge, questioning, previewing, understanding text structure, monitoring reading, summarizing and paraphrasing, using mental images, and predicting. Each lesson is 11 pages and is organized in a consistent format for ease of use. Teachers may choose to complete some or all of the lesson activities in order to best meet the needs of their students.

Audio recordings: The audio CD includes recordings of the books and poems to support fluency practice.
