I am so happy with my purchase! This book is aimed toward grades 6-8, but I plan to use it with my English 9 students. The set-up is wonderful, and everything is done for you. Yay...no prep! There are 12 units, 3 per content area: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Covering a variety of subject areas makes this perfect test prep material. The introduction of the book is for teachers to familiarize themselves with the layout of the book, as well as the "what, why, and how" of the following: Close Reading, Reading Fluency, Pairing Fiction and Nonfiction Texts, and Differentiation. It also provides tips, strategies, and examples. This is especially helpful to new teachers. Each of the 12 units is about 9 pages in length. Within those pages there are a variety of activities, complete with answer key. Here is a list of what is included: 1. Unit Overview, Theme Summary, Standards, and Materials 2. Teacher Notes with Lesson Steps for both the nonfiction and fictional readings and Teacher Think-Alouds for modeling close reading strategies 3. Nonfiction and Fiction texts, paired together by theme (these include a variety from poems to excerpts, articles to advertisements) 4. Student Response Pages with text-dependent questions for each paired reading 5. Compare/Contrast Activity of the 2 provided readings 6. 4 different Extension Activities, giving students the opportunity to choose the direction in which they would like to extend their learning of the theme The Appendices include: 1. References 2. Correlation to the Standards 3. Tips and Strategies for Implementation and Engagement 4. Pacing Suggestions 5. Fluency Strategies 6. Assessment Options 7. Student Reproducibles (Annotation Chart and Close Reading Bookmarks) 8. A fun song to remember the steps of Close Reading is also included on the last page if you enjoy incorporating music into your lessons Overall, I give Close Reading with Paired Texts: Secondary by Lois Oczkus and Timothy Rasinski 5/5 stars! I highly recommend it to teachers in grades 6-8 or 6-9 (depending on their skill level). Everything is 100% complete, requiring no extra prep on the teacher's part, except having the materials copied and ready to go when your students walk in the room! It's the perfect classroom resource for those looking to teach close reading strategies that focus on improving comprehension and fluency. Thank you so much! :-)
