Thomas Bean, Ph.D.

Thomas Bean, Ph.D., is Professor of Reading and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Tom earned his Ph.D. at Arizona State University and is considered a leading scholar in content-area literacy. He currently serves as co-editor of the International Reading Association’s Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, and he is senior author of the widely used text, Content Area Literacy: An Integrated Approach (9th ed.). He has twice been honored with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Education Distinguished Research Award for his studies on reader responses to multicultural young adult literature in content-area classrooms. His current research interests include investigations of teacher creativity in the content areas and multimodal teaching practices.
