Boys Dance Too by Joshua McDowell

After school, he walked past the old community center on his way home. Music floated out into the street – soft, then strong, like a whisper turning into a song.
He stopped.
The music pulled at him, as if it were calling his name.
He followed it, step by step, into the community center.
He peeked inside a dance studio.

Joshua McDowell was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up with a single mother. Ever since he can remember, he has always had a love for writing. He is passionate about creating stories that center underrepresented voices, particularly Black children and families. His work explores themes of identity, self-expression, belonging, and resilience, drawing inspiration from his own experiences. He believes deeply in the power of children’s literature to inspire, affirm, and open hearts, and he is committed to creating work that uplifts young readers, encourages them to dream boldly, and reminds them they are seen, valued, and free to be fully themselves.

Where All Colors Belong by Monique Williams

“Everyone dreams in rainbows; colors swirl through the sky like a song carried by the wind,” she said.
Iris touched her chin thoughtfully. “But, Mom, where is black?”
Her mother blinked in surprise. “What do you mean?”
“You taught me that rainbows have red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet too. But what about black?”

Monique Williams is doctor with over 20 years of experience in public health equity, advocating for inclusion and representation in underserved communities. After graduating from Meharry Medical College in 2004, she was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army and later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. Her service spans the National Health Service Corps, FQHCs, county health departments, a philanthropic school-based program, and statewide dental missions. In 2020, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, focusing on maternal and child health.

Myree’s Braid Day Adventure by Vikki Franklin

“Today Myree’s hair wasn’t just hair; it was her history, her heritage, her crown. When her mother finished, Myree’s back was draped in long beaded braids, each one a gorgeous strand of pride.
Chin up, she stepped outside and felt her braids swing behind her like a scarf in a soft breeze.”

Vikki R. Franklin is a native of Southern California who proudly represents the BIPOC community. With a master’s degree in early childhood education, she has dedicated over 30 years to working in early child development as a teacher and manager.
